Interview with machinima author Baron Soosdon(Continued)

SC:
What 3 words would best describe you?

BS: Stubborn, twisted, Finnish

SC:
Your recent video "Limited Escapism: To Cure A Hangover" seems to sum up your attitude towards murlocs. I would feel bad if any Murloc had to encounter you in real life, personally I can't stand the gargling things, but to some they're lovable creatures. Why all the hating on murlocs?

BS: Once the murlocs dared to garlgelelgrlgrlg and throw spears at me. Revenge is sweet.

For anyone that is not familiar with machinima you are not going to find the definition in a standard dictionary but you can read a bit about it here.

SC: So Baron, what got you first interesting in making Machinima?

BS: It was a Blackwing Lair PvE raid movie called "A Few Good Men: Rite Of Passage" by Devlin. When I saw it, I thought "Whoa! I want to get me one of those!". So a few weeks later, my first WoW movie about a Molten Core raid was born. A bit later I tried to do an actual machinima (called Twill For The Kill). I can't actually tell what movie made me do real machinimas instead of PvE-movies, but I think it's the thing that I've always wanted to do - movies of my own.

SC: How long does it typically take you to make a movie from start to finish? And what programs do you use to create your movies?

BS: This really depends on the movie. If it is an idiotic in-game filmed short it can be done in an hour. UEv0:SYS took about 3 and a half months to make - though I did not make it on full-speed. The program list varies a bit, but the most essential tools are WoW model viewer, WoW map viewer, WoW itself, Fraps for recording the footage and Sony Vegas for the editing and compositing. Lately I've been starting to learn a bit of After Effects.

SC: If someone wanted to start making movies how would you suggest they begin the process?

BS: Well the first thing of course is to get your idea straight. How does the movie start, what happens in the middle and how does it end. Then you need to think how you actually do it - will it be in-game filming or using the viewer programs. In addition to all these things you also need to know at least the basics of the editing programs.

SC: What was the first movie you made and how long ago did you make it? Were you satisfied with the quality level of the film?

BS: My first movie was a PvE movie about a guild raid to MC. Back then I was amazed but now it just looks like crap with many beginner mistakes. You can view it at this address: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8394783132262903232&hl=en

SC: What project are you most proud of?

BS: My entry for the warcraftmovies.com Fabled Few contest, called "Limited Escapism: To Cure A Hangover".

It was really cool to make and it has guest stars in it - Olibith and Nyhm. This one is a really weird movie - it is multilingual (there is Finnish, French and English spoken throughout the film) and it has many genres inside of it. But overall it is a comedy machinima.
