Interview with Pally Dog, Site Manager of WoW Vault
(http://wowvault.ign.com)
(continued)
SC: So you had your characters planned out prior to WoW, but what
I found interesting is that your real life plans actually changed a bit
when you started working at WoW Vault, and it actually ended up changing
your career path.
PD: It sure
did. I was working as a veterinary technician and when I started volunteering
for the WoW Vault, I was like "Wow, this cool, I never knew what
into a website!" I eventually went back to school for web page design
and admin, not only because I really enjoyed it, but I was thinking about
the whole "Work from home and game when I want!" idea....I'd
say it's worked out better than I expected!
SC: Definitely, that's where giving up some game time for another
interest is well worth it!
As a female heading up as the site manager I think it sets a really good
example for other female players that feel the need to kind of hide their
identity. You had mentioned that when you first started playing that you
liked MMOs since they couldn't judge you by your age, gender, race, looks,
etc. Do you still feel the same way?
PD: Yes. I've
actually been mistaken for a guy quite regularly, which doesn't bother
me at all. It's better than getting hit on by dorks because I'm a woman.
How people react to you in game is based on your
conduct. One example, I was in two different groups one day, running Razorfen
on my priest. Both groups had female paladins. The one was the main tank.
She did an awesome job, held agro, pulled great and run the group smoothly.
It was awesome. The group listened to her and treated here with respect.
The second group, the girl piped up "Any other
girls in group?" and made a big deal for being a girl. She chattered
away, didn't pay attention, didn't heal well, Needed items she shouldn't
have and then needed the helm off the last mob the tank where there specifically
to get after already needing 3 pieces of loot. Needless ot say did the
group like her? Not at all.
So if you want other players to like you, and treat
you with respect then it's up to you. I will admit you get the few annoying
newb who just aren't nice to anyone though.
SC: I agree totally, I know there's all sides to female players,
some good, some bad and I hope our site shows people the reality of both,
but that the majority are smart great players and take pride in what they
do.
I think you representing WoW Vault is a great positive influence not
only on female gamers, but to all gamers that if they work hard at something
they love they'll get rewarded in many
different ways.
PD: Well said.
On that note I do believe there's a great niche out there for female gamers.
It's not an all masculine genre anymore.
Your site certainly shows that, as well as other
female gaming sites on the rise.
SC: I definitely think female gamers are growing in numbers every
year, and I really hope we get to the point where people don't even blink
an eye at it. I know a lot of people who find it normal but hearing about
weird creepy tells and the 'omg its a girl' factor I hope slowly fades
away.
Before we wrap it up, I saw that you guys have a new contest out that
gives away an awesome prize, a murloc suit and a Blizzard beta key!
PD: Yep! We're
going to be five individual contests. The current contest now is a custom
UI contest. Sprawl, one of our most dedicated staff writers put together
a custom UI guide, so we used that for a contest idea. Next Monday we'll
be announcing the next contest. I can't tell you what each contest will
be yet but I can tell you that they're going to be submission based and
murloc themed.
At the very end we will be having a random drawing
for those who aren't up on their murloc skills. And, I really need to
announce this on the site, I'll do that when we're done, the runner ups
for each division of the contest will be receiving a WoW The Card Game
"March of the Legion" card pack, courtesy of Upper Deck Entertainment.
SC: Wow, that's great! They definitely sound intriguing and those
prizes sound great, so I'm sure its worth a try for everyone to enter.
WoW Vault definitely has a lot of features that are sure to occupy your
time, so if you haven't stopped by yet be sure to! The site is: http://wowvault.ign.com
Thanks so much for the interview, I really appreciate you setting aside
the time. I wish you luck on your future leading WoW Vault!
PD: Thank you
as well. I really enjoyed our interview.
